On December 22nd at 2:45 am while on patrol, police detected a smell of acrid smoke in the 2000 Block of Oak Bay Ave. With the assistance of the Oak Bay Fire Department, the odour was found to be coming from a commercial BBQ from behind a local business. Inside the BBQ was found a quantity of coiled up copper cable that someone was burning the plastic off. The wire was seized but it was not determined who was responsible for this incident or where the copper wire came from.

On December 22nd at 3:00 pm police attended a break, enter and theft at a residence in the 3000 block of Middowne Rd. Stolen was a television, an X box, 2 cell phones and some other property. The suite was believed to have been left unlocked as no damage or forced entry was discovered. Police are continuing their investigation.

On December 25th at 9:30 pm a motorcycle was observed eastbound on Cadboro Bay Rd approaching a drinking driving check stop at Eastdowne Rd. The motorcycle had no lights, no license plate, and the driver had no helmet. Upon police speaking with the driver, a strong odour of liquor was detected on his breath. A subsequent roadside breath test produced a “FAIL” reading resulting in an immediate 90 day roadside driving prohibition and the motorcycle was impounded for 30 days. 

On December 26th at 8:10 pm police were conducting a check-stop for impaired drivers at the intersection of Beach Drive and Goodwin Street. A vehicle was checked and police detected an odour of liquor on the drivers’ breath. A subsequent roadside breath test produced an alcohol reading sufficient to result in a 24 hour driving prohibition. A sober person inside the vehicle was permitted to drive the vehicle home.

On December 27th at 1:00 am police observed a pick-up truck speeding in the area of Oak Bay High School. The truck turned onto Cranmore Rd and failed to stop at the 4-way stop at Hampshire Rd. Police pulled the vehicle over and detected the odour of liquor on the breath of the driver. A subsequent roadside breath test produced a “FAIL” reading resulting in an immediate 90 day roadside driving prohibition and a 30 day impoundment of the pick-up.
