Community Recreation - Support Attendants

Spring Break Camps

March 18-29, 2019

Applications are invited for Support Attendants in our Spring Break Camps. Support Attendants will liaise with parents and children and assist instructors with the supervision of camps and implementing camp activities. A warm, friendly rapport with children, parents, and staff, plus the energy and enthusiasm to ensure varied and enjoyable programs are essential for these positions. Support attendants provide 1:1 care for participants within camps.

Responsibilities:

  • Actively participate and facilitate pre-planned activities for a variety of age groups;

  • Liaise with children, parents and staff in a warm and friendly manner;

This work is under the direction of the Lounge Supervisor in menu planning, organizing the kitchen, maintaining supplies, preparing and presenting nutritional and tasty meals, soups and sandwiches. 

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares daily menu items as ordered by patrons or Supervisor;

  • Prepares and presents food in a pleasing manner;

  • Adheres to all safety standards for the protection of public;

  • Ensures cooking and service area are kept clean at all times;

  • Maintains the necessary kitchen supplies and equipment and notifies supervisor of any shortages, repairs, etc;

  • Cleans bus trays, dish trays, pots and pans, and washes dishes as necessary to maintain continuity of service in food areas as necessary;

  • Carves meats, portions food on plates to fill individual orders and buffets.

Qualifications:

  • Cooking experience in a similar environment;

  • Successful completion of a recognized provincial food services program, or equivalent industry experience and training;

  • Food Safe Level 1;

Hours:  

  • Monday to Sunday, various shifts between 7am–10pm up to a maximum of 25 hours per week.

2019-20 Golf Instructors

Henderson Recreation Centre

Applications are invited for Golf Instructors at the Henderson Park Par 3 Golf Course. Instructors are responsible for lesson planning, organizing and instructing golf lessons for adults, teens and children. Applicants should have a well-rounded golf background and will be responsible for teaching materials under the guidance of the Community Recreation Coordinator.

Qualifications:

  • A strong background in golf;

  • Experience teaching a variety of ages;

  • Strong organizational skills;

  • Ability to interact with patrons in a warm, friendly manner;

  • Be able to create a fun learning environment;

  • NCCP Level-1 or equivalent golf coaching certification;

Golf Program Attendants

Henderson Recreation Centre

This is recreation work related to the operation of the Henderson Park Par 3 Golf Course. This position monitors that participants have paid, and are following golf course rules and etiquette to ensure the enjoyment and satisfaction of all participants and members of the public.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that golf course rules and etiquette are followed;

  • Ensure that the golf course and equipment are being properly maintained;

  • Ensure the safety of the participants at all times;

  • Check court tags and ensure appropriate play on outdoor tennis courts.

Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of the game of golf required;

  • Ability to work effectively with members of the public and staff in a diplomatic and tactful manner;

  • Ability to work without direct supervision in an independent and responsible manner;

  • Current Emergency First Aid, and CPR-C;

Facility Maintenance Person

Full Time-Night Shift

Oak Bay Recreation Centre

This is custodial and maintenance work involving the operation, cleaning, and maintenance of the Oak Bay Recreation Centre together with associated buildings and equipment.  The Employee in this position carries out custodial and cleaning duties, as well as maintenance functions involving ice making, refrigeration, building heating, pool heating and filtration equipment.  Duties vary according to the specialized area and activity assigned, the season and facility activity needs.

Qualifications:

  • At least three years’ experience in custodial tasks and building maintenance in a recreation facility or similar setting including ice making, building heating, air support structures, pool heating and filtration equipment, and the operation of various equipment;

  • Level I and II Pool Operators Certificate; 

  • Valid Refrigeration Operator Certificate recognized under the BC Pressure Vessels and Boilers Act or equivalent; 

  • Building Service Worker Level 1;

  • Current CPR C certificate;

  • a valid BC Driver’s License (Class 5);

  • Provision of a current criminal record check.

Hours:

  • Four - ten hour shifts; 40 hours per week, 10:00 pm – 8:00 am

Rate:    

  • $28.34-$29.59 per hour  (with Refrigeration Operators Certificate or equivalent, Pool Op I & II, Building Service Worker Level I, CPR C)

  • $27.29-$27.95 per hour  (without Refrigeration Operators Certificate or equivalent, with Pool Op I & Building Service Worker Level I, CPR C)

 (Benefits include Municipal Pension Plan, Medical, Extended Health and Dental coverage, vacation and sick entitlement.)

NOTE: It is a requirement of the position that applicants either possess a Refrigeration Operator Certificate or equivalent, or, as condition of employment, the successful applicant will be required to obtain certification within a specified period of time, at their own cost.

 

Maintenance Person(s)

Oak Bay Recreation Centre & Neighbourhood Learning Centre

We invite applications from qualified candidates for maintenance auxiliary hours involving janitorial, custodial and preventative building and equipment maintenance work performed in an Oak Bay Parks, Recreation & Culture Department Facility.  The auxiliary Facility Maintenance Person, under the direction of the facility’s supervisor, will carry out maintenance functions including pool heating and filtration system maintenance without close supervision.

Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for the overall cleanliness of the assigned area during a shift;

  • Vacuuming, mopping and sweeping as required;

  • Cleaning washrooms and change room areas;

  • Set up rooms as per schedule;

  • Performs routine minor maintenance of equipment, pool chemistry, data readings, as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Sound working knowledge and experience with building maintenance and cleaning routines;

  • Good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of equipment;

  • Proven initiative and ability to work without close supervision;

  • Current CPR-C;

Hours:

Parks Labourers

1 Position: #2 (see below): Refurbishing benches throughout the municipality including sanding, stripping and painting.

1 Position: #3 (see below): Assisting the Greenskeeper with the upkeep of the Par 3 Henderson Golf Course, jogging circuit, wooded and parks areas.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares and cares for the grounds and playing surfaces throughout the municipality;

  • Upkeep and irrigation of parks and boulevards;

  • Performs routine tasks such as weeding, watering, cultivating, trimming and cutting of grass;

  • Cleans debris and litter from assigned areas;

  • Operation of various types of equipment related to the various tasks assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Experience or training in parks, irrigation, and ground maintenance;
