Monterey Recreation Centre

This work is under the direction of the Head Cook in menu planning, organizing the kitchen, maintaining supplies, preparing and presenting nutritional and tasty meals, soups, sandwiches and baked goods.


  • Prepares daily menu items as planned by Head Cook;

  • Prepares and presents food in a pleasing manner;

  • Adheres to all safety standards for the protection of public;

  • Ensures cooking and service area are kept clean at all times;

  • Maintains the necessary kitchen supplies and equipment and notifies Head Cook of any shortages, repairs, etc;

  • Cleans bus trays, dish trays, pots and pans, and washes dishes as necessary to maintain continuity of service in food areas as necessary;

  • Cooks and carves meat for rentals and special events.


  • Cooking experience in a similar environment;

  • Successful completion of a recognized provincial food services program, or equivalent industry experience and training;

  • Food Safe Level 1& 2;

  • Provision of a current police or RCMP Criminal Record check.

Early Childhood Educator

Windsor Pavilion

Applications are invited for a regular part time Early Childhood Educator at Preschool Playhouse at Windsor Pavilion beginning August 26, 2019. The Preschool Playhouse program follows the Learning through Play philosophy.

A warm relationship with children, the energy and enthusiasm to provide varied and enjoyable activities, combined with the ability to work with the children, parents and staff in a friendly and effective manner, are essential for this position. The successful applicant must possess the ability, knowledge and skills to plan, organize and implement age appropriate activities as well as work independently and responsibly without direct supervision.


  • Minimum 2 years experience working with preschool aged children;

  • Ability to work as an effective team member;

  • Applicant must be a minimum of 19 years of age;

  • Early Childhood Educator (ECE) Certificate from a recognized post-secondary institute (and licensed to practice in BC);

  • Must meet BC Child Care Licensing requirements for valid Emergency First Aid and CPR-C;

  • Current BC Class 4 Driver’s Licence and abstract;

  • Provision of a current Criminal Record check.


  • September – June: 8:30am – 12:15pm, Monday – Friday at Preschool Playhouse; July – August: vacation coverage for daycare staff at Paddington Station Daycare, varying hours between 7:30am – 5:30pm, Monday - Friday.

Rate of Pay:

Facility Operations Coordinator

Oak Bay Recreation Centre

Reporting to the Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture, this position is responsible for the overall strategic planning, budgeting, administration, and building systems operation of the Parks, Recreation and Culture department’s maintenance division.This position is responsible for the cleanliness and effective operation of all Recreation buildings and ensures proper recruitment, supervision, training and evaluation of maintenance personnel.Exercises independent judgement in resolving issues, and is the department’s key contact for outside agencies and other departments on building-related matters.


  • Oversees building operations at all Recreation buildings and facilities;

  • Prepares maintenance budget estimates and continually monitors the budget;

  • Oversees the annual capital program related to buildings and facilities;

  • Ensures adherence to all safety and technical regulations;

  • Recruitment, mentoring, and performance management of maintenance staff;

  • Ensures adequate long term planning to maintain all buildings and facilities to a high standand, and prepares submissions for inclusion in the 10 year capital plan;

  • Performs related duties as required.


  • Supervisory course and 3 years supervisory experience in a unionized recreation centre;

  • Refrigerator Operator Certification, or 5th class power engineer refrigeration endorsement;

  • Completion of Senior Secondary School together with at least eight years experience in recreation facility operations, including pools, arenas, air support structures and EMS;

  • Thorough knowledge of building operation systems in recreation centres, including custodial, mechanical, building and equipment maintenance and arena/pool systems;

  • Thorough knowledge of all applicable safety and technical regulations;

  • Computer skills in Outlook, Excel, Word, Vadim and building maintenance systems;

  • Pool Operator's Level 1 and Level 2 Certificates;

  • Current Emergency First Aid & CPR C certificate;

  • Valid BC Driver’s Licence.


  • 8:00am - 4:00pm; Monday to Friday; 40 hrs/wk.   

Hours and days subject to variation to meet operational requirements.


  • $2,924.00 - $3160.80 bi-weekly plus municipal benefits.


Group Fitness Instructor

Monterey Recreation Centre

Monterey Centre is looking for a group fitness instructor to teach fitness classes for those over 50 years. Instructors are responsible for delivering high quality group exercise classes that meet the needs of our patrons at Monterey Centre. Responsibilities include: lesson planning, organizing, maintaining a safe environment, and instructing fitness classes.


  • Previous fitness experience in a similar environment;

  • Customer service and public relations experience;

  • Must be a registered BCRPA Fitness Leader in group fitness, or equivalent;

  • Current CPR-C  and Emergency First Aid;

  • Fridays – 10:00am and 11:00am classes

Lounge Host I

Monterey Recreation Centre

The Lounge Host, Monterey Centre, reports to the Head Cook and is primarily responsible for dishwashing, keeping the kitchen clean and tidy, serving at special events, and assisting in the operation of the kitchen.


  • Working with the chef to ensure the successful operation of various functions;

  • Serving, clearing tables, removing and washing dishes;

  • Occasional day, evening and weekend shifts, as required for special events.

Rate of Pay:

  • $13.53 per hour plus $1.89 per hour in lieu of benefits.


Maintenance Person(s)

We invite applications from qualified candidates for maintenance auxiliary hours involving janitorial, custodial and preventative building and equipment maintenance work performed in an Oak Bay Parks, Recreation & Culture Department Facility.  The auxiliary Facility Maintenance Person, under the direction of the facility’s supervisor, will carry out maintenance functions including pool heating and filtration system maintenance without close supervision.


  • Responsible for the overall cleanliness of the assigned area during a shift;

  • Vacuuming, mopping and sweeping as required;

  • Cleaning washrooms and change room areas;

  • Set up rooms as per schedule;

  • Performs routine minor maintenance of equipment, pool chemistry, data readings, as needed.


  • Sound working knowledge and experience with building maintenance and cleaning routines;

  • Good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of equipment;

  • Proven initiative and ability to work without close supervision;

  • Current CPR-C;

  • Provision of a current Police or RCMP Criminal Record check.


  • Day, afternoon and night shifts, based on operational requirements, up to 20 hours per week.


  • $20.66 - $20.96 per hour + $2.89 - $2.93 per hour in lieu of benefits 

  • $28.34 per hour + $3.97 per hour in lieu of benefits (with Refrigeration Operator and Pool Operator 1 & 2 certification)


Parks Labourer

Performing manual work associated with a variety of tasks related to the maintenance of municipally owned property, community parks, playing fields and other recreation areas generally considered to be for public use and enjoyment. 


  • Prepares and cares for the grounds and playing surfaces throughout the municipality;

  • Cleaning and set up for Windsor Pavilion;

  • Performs routine tasks such as weeding, watering, cultivating, trimming and cutting of grass;

  • Cleans debris and litter from assigned areas;

  • Operation of various types of equipment related to the various tasks assigned.


  • Experience or training in parks, irrigation, and ground maintenance;

  • Valid BC Driver’s License;

  • Current Emergency First Aid Certification including CPR-C;

  • Provision of a current Police or RCMP Criminal Record check;

  • Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and diplomatic manner;

  • Ability to work both as a team member and with minimum supervision.


  • 8 hours shifts between 6:00 am–10:00 pm; Saturdays and Sundays,

  • Up to 4 hour shifts between 5pm – 10pm; Wednesday evenings.


  • $26.28 per hour + $3.67 per hour in lieu of benefits (Saturday and Sundays)

  • $20.66 per hour + $3.67 per hour in lieu of benefits (Wednesdays)
