Statement on 1561 York Place

On the morning of October 17, 2019, the District of Oak Bay was made aware of work being undertaken to alter the Annandale rock walls located at 1561 York Place.

In response to these works being undertaken, the District has now employed a 60 day temporary protection order to limit any further alterations to the walls.

While the District recognizes that these walls have heritage value, and that the community has passionately advocated for them to remain intact, the District was unable to prevent the alterations due to existing property owner rights.

Oak Bay Council maintains its mandate to recognize and protect heritage within the local government’s regulatory powers and legislated authority, both of which have certain limits. The 60 day temporary protection order provides Council time to further consider options available.

The District acknowledges and shares the Community’s disappointment resulting from alteration of the Annandale rock walls.
