THE LEADERS IN TRAINING PATHWAY - OAK BAY PARKS, RECREATION AND CULTURE
LEADERS IN TRAINING PATHWAY 1 - JUNIOR LEADERS
The Junior Leaders Camp is the first phase of Leaders in Training Pathway. This fun and engaging summer camp is designed for our experienced campers who are looking to develop leadership skills and continue to learn while still having a blast with their friends! Junior Leader Campers will have opportunities to plan, develop, and participate in a variety of camp games, crafts and activities for our Summer Camps participants under the guidance of senior camp instructors. This camp is the first step in our Leaders in Training Pathway, followed by Leaders in Training Pathway 2 – Future Leaders Program and finally Leaders in Training Pathway 3 – Leaders in Training, an application and interview only program.
LEADERS IN TRAINING PATHWAY 2 - FUTURE LEADERS
(Formerly known as the Leaders in Training Program.)
The Future Leaders Program is the second phase of the Leaders in Training Pathway. This program focuses on introductory job preparation skills through the perspective of Oak Bay Parks, Recreation and Culture Summer Camp Leaders. Future Leaders will learn how to develop cover letters, write resumes as well as learn important interview strategies! There will also be a focus on learning about behavior guidance strategies, camp lesson planning, and general skills around working with children. Finaly, upon completion of this program, participants will have the opportunity to volunteer within a variety of Oak Bay Summer Camps such as Sports, Aquatics and Fine Arts.
This program is the second step in our Leaders in Training Pathway, after Leaders in Training Pathway – 1 – Junior Leaders Camp and before Leaders in Training Pathway 3 – Leaders in Training, an application and interview only program.
Both Leaders in Training Pathway 1 – Junior Leaders Camp and Leaders in Training Pathway 2 – Future Leaders Program, are highly desirable when applying for the Leaders in Training Pathway 3 – Leaders in Training (formerly the youth internship), an application and interview only program. Applications for that program are accepted in January of the year you apply until May 15th of the same year.+
LEADERS IN TRAINING PATHWAY 3 – LEADERS IN TRAINING
(Formerly known as the Internship Program)
The Leaders in Training program is not an inputted programed – Applicants apply by summitting a application and resume to the human resources department at Oak Bay Recreation.
This is for Youth that loved their summers at camp and the awesome leaders who made it special. They can be that person for someone else! This Youth Leadership Program involves working in recreation with kids and gaining real work experience over the summer. Youth will build leadership and job-readiness skills in a fun, supportive environment, and make some great memories along the way. There is a $500 honorarium per candidate who successfully completes the program.
Application Criteria
- Open to ages 15 and up as of June 2026.
- Will be scheduled to work four weeks in summer camps with children between the ages of 4 to 12 years.
- Must consent to a criminal record check.
- Must attend orientation training in June.
- Invited to attend Oak Bay Summer Camp Staff Training in June.

Applications for the summer of 2026 will be open in January 2026 and will close May 15, 2026. Only successful applicants will be contacted for an interview.
