Monterey Social Activity Membership

Oak Bay Parks, Recreation & Culture offers the Social Activity Membership (SAM) at the Monterey Recreation Centre (MRC). Join clubs and social activities designed for fun and connection. Check out The Happenings newsletter each month for updates. Learn about services like Nursing Footcare, Blood Pressure Clinics, and Income Tax assistance available for SAM members. Agemates
A lively discussion group focusing on women’s issues.

Art Club
Artists of various abilities meet to work on their own projects in the medium of their choice. No instruction is provided and finished works are displayed throughout the Centre.

Billiards
Members of all levels can enjoy playing on the four tables in the dedicated pool room.

Bibliophilies Book Club
The group meets to discuss one book a month in a facilitator led session. The next book club is on the club board in Monterey.

Book Clubs
Groups meet to discuss one book a month in a facilitator-led session.

Carpet Bowling
Combines fun and skill and is a great way to keep your mind active and your body moving.

Chess
Re-discover how chess improves cognitive performance, concentration, logical thinking, and problem solving.

Chinese Brush Painting
Members share skills and instructional tips as they practice the art of Chinese Brush Painting using traditional materials and methods. There is an annual show of their work in the Centre.

Chorus
The Monterey Chorus is a mixed choir singing in 4-part harmony with an eclectic repertoire of songs. We practice once weekly and perform several times a year at care homes and seniors’ residences.

Colour Your World
Members of this group meet for friendly conversation while working on adult colouring books.

Concert Band
Concert Band invites members to share their instruments, playing skills, and love of music as they perform at various venues in the community.

Darts
A get-together to play two games of darts, enjoy a social tea break, and then two games of “Micky.”

French
A meeting for members with a range of proficiency who enjoy discussions in French on prearranged topics.

Garden Club
Members find out about a variety of topics such as discouraging deer, attracting butterflies, pet poisons, and growing citrus trees in Victoria from local experts and garden visits.

Hula Dance
Have fun dancing to beautiful Hawai’ian music, healthy exercise, and socializing. No formal instruction is provided, though guides are available for purchase. Occasionally, club members perform in the community.

Mahjong
Mahjong club members enjoy the Western version of the traditional tile-based game that originated in China in the 19th Century.

Merry Widows
Merry Widows is a support group for recently bereaved and long-term widows.

Mystery Book Club
An eclectic mix of mystery books and authors including the police procedural. Gothic, historical, and “cozy” mystery variety of writing styles.

Scrabble
A social club with friendly people who enjoy challenging their brains and learning new words.

Scriveners
This friendly and supportive group of writers share their work by writing individual pieces and then reading them aloud at the meeting.

Sing-Along
If you love to sing beloved songs from yesteryear, this friendly club is for you.

Spanish
A group for members who speak Spanish at varying levels of competence. There is always lively friendly conversation, a large range of topics and much laughter.

Stamps
Meetings for members who enjoy the interesting world of stamp collecting. Extra stamps are donated to the Cancer Society.

Table Tennis Level 1 & 2
Table tennis improves your mental alertness, reflexes, and your concentration while giving you a workout that is gentle on your joints.

Ukulele
All you need to join this group is a ukulele, your knowledge of basic chording, and your singing voice.

Woodcrafters
Experienced woodworkers have access to a large and well-equipped shop every day of the week to work on their own projects, or on items to be sold to help in the Centre’s fundraising efforts. An orientation is provided, but the club is not certified to give instruction.

Blood Pressure Clinic
A weekly service for Social Activity Members. Participants receive a wallet card to track their weekly blood pressure readings

Classical Tunes Sing-Along
Sing classic songs from the 50s to 70s with an enthusiastic, relaxed group. 20 songs sung each session. Come sing for fun! Led by a singer with a guitar.

Karaoke
Sing, dance, and just have fun in a no-pressure, supportive atmosphere – that’s what karaoke is all about!  Whether you’re belting out a solo, joining a group song, or dancing along to the music, everyone is welcome!  

Monday Morning Walks
Come join our volunteer lead walks at 3km or 5km

Needlecrafts Group
All needle crafters are welcome

Poetry Discussion Group
Read, listen, and discuss the power of poetry!

Friends of Monterey Centre Society is a valued partner of Monterey Recreation Centre. The society prides itself in supporting Monterey Recreation Centre programs and services through its fundraising efforts Popular annual fundraisers include the fall Bazaar and the winter Rummage Sale
