The District of Oak Bay’s Sign Bylaw determines the placement and location of election signs.
There are changes for 2026 on where you can place a sign for the General Local Election. Election Signs are only permitted from Sept. 11 until Oct. 21, end-of-day, 2026.

Quick Tips for Candidates
- Election signs are still permitted on boulevards in front of private property with the permission of the property owner, occupant, or strata corporation.
- Election signs are only permitted on municipal boulevards indicated in Schedule A of the Bylaw (images for reference below)
- Only two election signs per candidate are permitted in each designated area
- Election signs on municipal boulevards are not to exceed 2 feet x 2 feet and not to exceed 4 feet above natural grade.
Where to Place and Election Sign
Private Property
- Permitted on boulevards immediately in front of or connected to property with consent. (refer to Bylaw)
- Sign size is limited to 1.22 metres by 1.22 metres (4ft x 4ft)
Public Property
- Signs are only permitted on boulevards as provided in Schedule A of the Bylaw (refer to Schedule A and images below)
- Sign size is limited to 0.61 metres by 0.61 metres (2 ft. X 2 ft.) and the top of the size must not exceed 1.22 metres (4 ft.) above natural grade.
- Each Candidate is limited to 2 signs at each location outline in Schedule A of the Bylaw.

Additional Information
During the campaign, signs may get blown over and get damaged. Candidates are reminded to check their signs frequently.
Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has rules in place that apply to elections addressing the placement of election signs. Visit www.gov.bc.ca/electionsigns for more information about supplemental signs.
Signs Near Voting Places
On any voting day, no signs are permitted within 100 metres of any Voting Place, inclusive of advance voting days at Monterey Recreation Centre. Refer to the images below.
Telus and BC Hydro
Telus and BC Hydro do not allow the placement of signs on their telephone or hydro poles. Individuals placing such signs may be subject to fines
