The District of Oak Bay and the Oak Bay Fire Department are excited to announce an upcoming Firefighter recruitment process. Successful applicants may be placed on an eligibility list to fill future vacancies within the municipality for a two-year period. The Department is seeking suitably qualified and dynamic women and men to join the team. Applicants should be community-minded, physically fit, positive, energetic, active, team players who enjoy working with the public and who are seeking a fulfilling career. Below is a summary of the required qualifications. Minimum Qualifications:
• Legally entitled to work in Canada
• At least 19 years of age
• Grade 12 Certificate or GED equivalency
• Class 3 Driver’s Licence with Air Brake Endorsement
• Safe driving behaviour as demonstrated in applicant’s current drivers abstract
• First Responder or Occupational First Aid Level 3
• No criminal convictions related to the job of Firefighter
• Computer literacy
• Physically fit for the position and medically fit according to the standards set in NFPA 1582
• Completion of an accredited (IFSAC or ProBoard) NFPA 1001 Firefighter 1 &2 program

Preferred Qualifications:
• Progress towards, or the completion of a related post-secondary education program (e.g., Red Seal Trades Qualification or University Degree)
• Higher level First Aid Certifications
• Additional Fire Service related courses (e.g., NFPA Fire Officer 1, NFPA 1006 Technical Rescue)
• Ability to swim and/or SCUBA Dive
• Extensive volunteer and/or community service experience

The Oak Bay Fire Department offers wages and benefits as per their negotiated benefits and entitlements outlined in the respective IAFF Collective Agreements.

Residency Restriction
Fire Department staff are subject to a restricted area of residence, and shall reside within the following areas: All municipalities within the Capital Regional District (Oak Bay, Victoria, Saanich, Esquimalt, Willis Point, Central Saanich, Sidney, North Saanich, Highlands, View Royal, Langford, Colwood, and Metchosin) with the exception of Sooke and any offshore islands. All newly hired employees must reside within the described boundary area within one (1) year of their initial date of hire.

• Copy of hearing examination/audiogram (dated within 12 months of application)
• NFPA 1001 Level 1 & 2 (IFSAC or ProBoard)
• First Responder 3 or Industrial First Aid Level 3
• Copies of all Fire Service-Related Courses
