The District of Oak Bay is excited to launch the Oak Bay Coolkit program. The Oak Bay Coolkit program is a joint initiative between the Collaborative for Advanced Landscape Planning at the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Faculty of Forestry and the District, and is designed to engage residents on climate-change solutions in the community. 

The Coolkit is intended to mobilize individual and neighbourhood climate action through participation in a series of fun and interactive engagement activities, beginning with neighbourhood conversations, to local asset and climate vulnerability mapping, carbon footprint calculators, household and block sustainability ratings, visioning exercises and developing localized climate action plans. The ultimate goal of the Coolkit Program is to reduce carbon footprints and help create climate proof, resilient neighbourhoods.

The District is looking for climate champions in the community who are interested in making a positive difference through developing and promoting household and neighbourhood solutions for climate change. 

There will be three training workshops offered throughout May and June to engage, inform, and empower Oak Bay climate champions on how to develop collective climate action projects in their neighbourhood. Refreshments will be provided.

There are 30 spots available for local climate champions to participate in the Coolkit workshops in Year 1. As a climate champion, you will receive in-depth training through the three community Coolkit workshops as well as ongoing support from UBC and District staff as you work through the steps and engagement activities within the Coolkit, and develop your individual and/or neighbourhood climate action plans. 

For those applicants who cannot be accommodated in in-person workshops, the District will maintain a register of interested champions and groups for consideration in Years 2 and 3 of the Coolkit program, and share information and findings from the Year 1 initiatives.  The District is hoping to provide live-streaming of the training workshops for applicants who wish to listen in remotely.  The Oak Bay Coolkit is freely available for all interested residents and contains ‘DIY’ self-directed activities that people are free to try out.
