Utility Locator/Fitter
Regular Full-Time ($36.71/hour – 2024 Rates) Pay Grade 8

The District of Oak Bay's Engineering and Public Works Department is seeking a skilled professional with a proven ability to accurately locate and maintain underground utilities, from water mains to fiber optics. The Utility Locator/Fitter performs specialized work requiring considerable skill and ability in the locating and marking of a variety of underground utilities, for maintenance, repair, and capital projects. The Utility Locator/Fitter performs specialized maintenance, installation and testing on hydrants, valves, meters, mains, and fittings. The incumbent exercises considerable independent judgement in all phases of the work. Assignments vary in complexity and detail and include locating and daylighting buried utilities.
Our ideal candidate has graduated from secondary school or equivalent, complemented with additional courses in plan reading and underground utility locating, NULCA (National Utility Locating Contractors Association) certification (or approved equivalent), possession of a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License, three years’ experience working in a Public Works construction environment, considerable experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings and locating buried infrastructure, sufficient health, physical condition, strength, stamina, and coordination to permit performance of work in all types of weather, in addition to Water Distribution Level II certification. Candidates may be required to complete testing or assessments as part of the selection process. This position is represented by CUPE Local 374.
