Weekly Media Release Dec 12-18, 2016

On December 13th at approx. 8:00 am police received a report of a theft from vehicle that occurred overnight in the 2100 block of Oak Bay Ave.   Two cameras and a cell phone had been stolen from a vehicle that was parked in an underground parkade.  Police remind residents that even if a vehicle is in a locked compound, do not leave valuables inside a vehicle and do not leave the vehicle unlocked.  Thieves often display ingenuous methods of gaining access to secured locations.

On December 13th at approx. 10:00 am police responded to a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian.  The 74 yr old female pedestrian had been crossing northbound in a crosswalk on Oak Bay Avenue at Monterey Avenue.  A 22 yr old driver of a pick-up truck was turning left from Monterey Ave onto Oak Bay Ave when the truck struck the pedestrian, knocking her down.  The pedestrian was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  The driver was charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

On Dec 13th at 1:20 pm police were called to a property on Yale Street where the body of a 25 yr old deceased male was found inside a garage under construction.  The deceased was not related to the property and was known as having no fixed address.  It appears the male may have been using the partially completed garage as shelter over the weekend.  Police enlisted the assistance of Saanich Police detectives and foul play is not suspected.  Cause of death has not been determined as yet and the results of an autopsy and toxicology are pending.

Dec 14th at 11:00 am police received a complaint from a patron at the Henderson Rec Centre that her coat and keys had been stolen while she was working out.  Police encourage the public to use the lockers available to secure property while utilizing public facilities.

Over the course of this past week there were seven motor vehicle accidents reported to police.  The public is reminded that when snow falls and temperatures drop, roads may become slippery and motorists need to drive slowly and plan extra time for your driving needs.
