Oak Bay Police Board Announces Chief Constable Andy Brinton’s Retirement

The Oak Bay Police Board announced today that Chief Constable Andy Brinton has provided his notice of retirement effective August 31, 2020.  Chief Brinton was appointed as Chief of the Oak Bay Police Department on April 22, 2014, and has served with distinction in both Municipal and RCMP forces over his 38-year career.

“Chief Brinton has brought a number of initiatives to Oak Bay that have made our community and our policing better,” said Mayor Kevin Murdoch, Chair of the Oak Bay Police Board. “His work, and the incredible staff he has helped develop, will continue to have a positive impact on Oak Bay for many years to come. While sorry to see him leave, we are very happy for him and wish him all the best in his retirement.”

With Chief Brinton’s upcoming departure, the Police Board undertook a review and interview process and is pleased to announce that current Oak Bay Deputy Chief Ray Bernoties will be appointed as the new Chief Constable effective September 1, 2020. The transition period will allow for a selection and onboarding process of a new Deputy Chief.

“We couldn’t be happier having Deputy Chief Bernoties step into the role of Chief Constable,” stated Chair Murdoch. “His experience and expertise are top notch, he has demonstrated exceptional leadership during his time in Oak Bay, and knows the community and department very well.”

Deputy Chief Bernoties was appointed as the Deputy Chief of the Oak Bay Police Department on May 15, 2017.  He has 28 years of experience as a police officer with a range of duties including his last position with the RCMP as the Chief Superintendent in Charge of Island District, overseeing the administration and operations of the 23 detachments on Vancouver Island.
