With the warm evenings upon us, Oak Bay Residents are reminded that Beach Fires are not permitted in the District of Oak Bay in accordance with bylaw 3803.

If you happen to come across a beach fire producing visible flame or smoldering please contact the Oak Bay Fire Department for extinguishment. (250-592-9121)

Many Adults, Children and Pets have been seriously burned by Beach Fires that have been smothered by sand for extinguishment. This process of extinguishment is very dangerous.  The sand does extinguish the flames however the sand continues to be heated from the radiant heat.  This creates an oven like effect which can cause very serious burns.  Beach fires can only be thoroughly extinguished by being doused with copious amounts of water.

The Oak Bay Fire Department wants all residents to enjoy the fantastic beaches throughout the Municipality.  A fire fuelled solely by natural gas, propane or charcoal briquettes and contained within a portable appliance or device that has been specifically designed for that purpose is permissible.

For more information please contact the Oak Bay Fire Department’s, Fire Prevention Division – (250) 592-9121.
