With the warm summer nights, it’s important to remind you that fires outdoors and on beaches are prohibited in all areas of Oak Bay including Mary Tod Island. Oak Bay Bylaw 3803 sections 45 prohibits any outdoor burning unless by special permit as outlined in section 46.

We ask that you to consider these tips;

  • Do not discard your cigarette butts (lit or extinguished) on the ground or out of your vehicle windows.
  • Take any bottles off of the beach or bush with you, they will reflect sunlight and can light a fire by accident
  • Stay on trails in local parks, and please do not smoke while enjoying them
  • If you’re using a propane fire pit or BBQ in your yard, use caution. Do not use it next to wood or plastic fences, railings or exterior walls, make sure its cold before covering it
  • If you live near a park or trees, practice safe pruning and brush reduction to reduce fire potential and fire spread.
  • If you smell a fire please report it without delay by calling your local fire department non emergency line, smoldering embers can become larger fires if left un-reported
