Appointment of
Deputy Fire Chief Darren Hughes

The Oak Bay Fire Department is proud to announce the appointment of Assistant Chief Darren Hughes to the position of Deputy Chief effective May 1, 2016. Assistant Chief Darren Hughes began his career with the Oak Bay Fire Department as a Firefighter Probationer on April 1, 1992 under the direction of then Fire Chief Bob Randall.  He was promoted to Lieutenant in 2006 and to Assistant Chief in 2013.  Over the course of his career he has been involved with the Community CPR Program, the Inter-Departmental Critical Incident Stress Program, as well as contributing many hours of his time fundraising for the community through the Firefighter Association’s charitable pursuits.  Currently he serves on the Board of Directors for the Kiwanis Club of Oak Bay and is the Treasurer for Milton Manor.

Prior to joining the Oak Bay Fire Department, Darren was an Elevator Mechanic as well as a metal fabricator.  His mechanical knowledge has been of great assistance in maintaining oversight of the Fire Department’s vehicles, equipment and building infrastructure in his Assistant Chief’s position.

Darren has also had significant involvement in the planning, development and training of the Capital Regional District’s Emergency Hazmat Response Team.  There he held the positions of Platoon Leader and Instructor and continues to serve on the CRD’s Operational Working Group. 

Darren is proud to continue to serve the Community in his new position of Deputy Fire Chief and Deputy Coordinator for the Emergency Program .
