Motor Vehicle Incident Involving Oak Bay Fire Department Apparatus

October 6, 2015

At approximately 06:30 this morning, the crew from Oak Bay Engine 1 was responding to a medical aid emergency in North Oak Bay.  While en-route, the driver of the vehicle incurred a medical condition which incapacitated him.  As a result, the fire apparatus veered off the road and proceeded through three residential properties in the 3200 block of Cadboro Bay Road before coming to rest.

There were no injuries to any residents or members of the public. The apparatus operator was treated and transported to hospital. One other firefighter had minor injuries that did not require treatment on scene. The scene is currently in the care and control of Oak Bay Police, who are conducting an investigation.

The Fire Department’s main concern at this time is for the health and well being of everyone involved in this incident.  We have taken steps to ensure that our firefighters are given adequate time to properly decompress from their exposure to what has been a significant event.

We are also concerned with assisting the residents involved by assessing property damage and ensuring that they have their immediate needs attended to.  Members of Oak Bay Police are assisting us in that regard.

We would also like to assure Oak Bay residents that the Fire Department remains fully operational with back up apparatus, equipment and personnel, while we transition through the process of assessing damage and moving forward.
