Notice - Volunteer Board and Committee Appointments

November 8, 2019

Oak Bay Municipal Council welcomes expressions of interest from residents who wish to volunteer their time as members of the following Council appointed boards and committees.  The advisory bodies to Council are currently under review. This is an interim recruitment and appointments will be for a six (6) month term expiring June 2020. Once the comprehensive review and implementation is complete a full recruitment process will be undertaken.

The Advisory Design Panel assists Council in assessing the design merits of select development proposals and provide recommendations to staff for consideration in negotiating and processing a development application with applicants; and to participate in the selection of community achievement awards.

The ADP is seeking three members. The panel has current vacancies for:
• a person with professional experience and/or demonstrated qualifications in either architectural, engineering, gardening, landscape design, heritage or the visual arts, and
• two registered architects.

The APC makes recommendations to Council on matters respecting land use, community planning, and proposed amendments and initiatives related to the Official Community Plan (OCP) and Zoning Bylaw. The Commission brings a broad community perspective to initiatives that promote a sustainable community by linking land use, transportation, environment, climate change, economy, heritage, and social and cultural considerations, all of which represent the community vision.

The District of Oak Bay is seeking to fill a vacancy for a general membership position (including representation under 35 years of age).

The Board of Variance is a three-person, quasi-judicial body established pursuant to the Local Government Act and appointed by the Municipal Council.  The work of the Board requires strong analytical and reasoning skills to consider applications to vary the provisions of the Zoning Bylaw, to make structural alterations to a building containing a lawful non-conforming use, or to grant relief from a requirement contained in the Tree Protection Bylaw.

Oak Bay Municipal Council welcomes expressions of interest from residents who wish to volunteer their time as a member of the Oak Bay Board of Variance.

The primary role of this Commission is promoting the architectural and cultural history that constitutes the heritage of the Municipality of Oak Bay.  The Commission is also responsible for creating and maintaining inventories of real property of heritage significance to Oak Bay as well as making recommendations with respect to the content of a community heritage register.  Membership requires energy and, on occasion, a willingness to undertake work outside of regular meetings.  Members of the Commission may also serve on the Heritage Foundation.

The Heritage Foundation seeks persons interested in serving as volunteer directors.  The goals of the Foundation are to promote the preservation, maintenance and restoration of buildings, structures and land in the Municipality of Oak Bay which have been designated as municipal heritage sites, or added to the Community Heritage Register, by Municipal Council.  As a registered society, the Foundation raises and disburses funds in this regard.

Persons who have an interest in architecture, heritage buildings or a good appreciation of heritage matters are encouraged to apply.

The Public Art Committee is looking for two additional committee members. Specifically, the Committee has current vacancies for:

  • a young person such as a post-secondary student or young professional with an interest in developing arts in the community, and
  • a local business person to connect with commercial side of the community.

Both committee members will work on aspects of the present ArtsAlive Oak Bay projects such as the Sculpture Walk, the summer Art Pianos, Acorn Arts Award, and the Oak Bay Arts and Culture Week in August of each year, as well as any new initiatives.

Residents interested in serving on the above noted boards and committees are invited to complete the application form (available online or in hard copy at the Corporate Services Department, 2167 Oak Bay Avenue), accompanied by any pertinent information that may assist Council in making the appointments, such as a resume or a letter of interest.
