ArtsAlive Public Art in Oak Bay
Oak Bay Parks, Recreation and Culture is very excited to announce ArtsAlive 2019 and the unveiling of 10 new public artworks in Oak Bay (various outdoor locations). This year’s pieces reflect the theme Confluence which means coming together or merging. The pieces were juried by the Oak Bay Public Art Advisory Committee after a public ‘call to artists’ and are each sponsored by a community business.
“It is exciting to see the enthusiastic community support for ArtsAlive in its sixth year. The arts experience seems to have enlivened Oak Bay!” says Oak Bay’s Arts Laureate, Barbara Adams.
New this year are guided and self-guided tours. Guided Tours will be held at 10:30am on the second Tuesday of each month from July-October, tours leave from the Monterey Recreation Centre, 1442 Monterey Avenue. Members of the public can also access information and audio files of the artists speaking about their work on the ArtsAlive website oakbay.ca/parks-recreation/arts-culture/artsalive. Similar to audio guides in an art gallery or museum, these new audio files now allow art lovers to access more information about the sculptures from their cell-phones and any device connected to the internet.
“We’re really happy with the addition of audio files this year, hearing from the artists adds new depth and meaning to the sculptures,” says Acting Arts and Culture Programmer, Karen Manders. “It’s like an outdoor art gallery, I encourage everyone to give it a try.”
As in past years, the community is invited to vote for their favourite sculpture and the most popular work will be considered for possible purchase by the municipality. Voting is available in three ways, the first is online via the ArtsAlive webpage parks-recreation/arts-culture/artsalive#vote, the second is via the QR codes displayed at each sculpture and third, via printed flyers located in the blue ballot boxes installed on Oak Bay Avenue, at Willows Beach (at Estevan), Oak Bay Recreation Centre, Monterey Recreation Centre, Windsor Pavilion and in Estevan Village.
Full project details including a downloadable map featuring the locations of the art works, sponsor and voting information is online at oakbay.ca/parks-recreation/arts-culture/artsalive. Printed flyers will also be available at Oak Bay Recreation Centre and Oak Bay Municipal Hall. This project, now in its sixth year, has been spearheaded by Oak Bay Arts Laureate Barbara Adams, whose vision and leadership is quickly making Oak Bay a destination for arts and culture.
The 2019/20 ArtsAlive program will officially launched on June 20 with a tour departing from the Oak Bay Beach Hotel at 3pm. Artists and sponsors will be in attendance. The public is invited to use their own vehicles to follow the tour.
