P R O C L A M A T I O N
Sno’uyutth Day - November 22, 2021

Whereas, on November 22, 2015, in a public ceremony held on the grounds of the new Oak Bay High School, the Sno’uyutth Welcome Pole was dedicated to mark the commitment to a revitalized and collaborative relationship among Oak Bay community residents, the District of Oak Bay, the Greater Victoria School District #61, and the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations, whose traditional territory includes Oak Bay; and

Whereas, the Sno’uyutth Welcome Pole provides an important recognition of the history, culture, and traditions of the Songhees and Esquimalt people and promotes understanding between our communities; and

Whereas, the Sno'uyutth pole is an enduring symbol of the collaboration possible between our communities; and

Whereas, Sno’uyutth, in the Lekwungen language means the “spreading of good energy” which, being mindful of our past, present and shared future, we strive to practice in our daily lives in Oak Bay; and

Whereas, the Sno'uyutth Welcome Pole inspires the people and District of Oak Bay to work in a good way to advance Truth and Reconciliation with the Lekwungen peoples as a priority in our community;

NOW THEREFORE I, Kevin Murdoch, Mayor of the District of Oak Bay, do hereby proclaim November 22, 2021 to be “Sno’uyutth Day” in Oak Bay.

Kevin Murdoch,
Mayor District of Oak Bay
