Kitchen Scraps Collection Commenced January 2014

Oak Bay residents received a brochure at their homes introducing the new mandatory Kitchen Scraps Collection Program. Click here to view the brochure introducing the program.

This is an exciting and important initiative that is rolling out across the CRD in 2014. Oak Bay was the first municipality to participate in the CRD pilot program in 2006, and since that time over 1500 tons of organic waste collected in Oak Bay has been diverted from the landfill.

The intention of this Kitchen Scraps Collection Program is to divert food waste from your garbage not your gardens. Backyard composting is still encouraged as is the use of your garburator.

Curbside totes and a kitchen catcher will be delivered to households who have not been participants in the pilot project in December. Organic kitchen waste will be banned entirely from the landfill in 2015.
