SUMMARY:Story Pole: Indigenous Veterans
DESCRIPTION:The Marion Cumming Lecture Series Presents Story Pole: Indigenous Veterans \nGuided by First Nations Elders\, this documentary explores the story of Indigenous veterans and how they are remembered today. This film begins with the story pole carved by Mungo Martin\, Henry Hunt and David Martin\, raised in 1956 at MEE-qan (Beacon Hill Park). The mystery surrounding the war memorial plaque dedicated to Indigenous veterans\, found at the base of the pole\, serves as a gateway to a powerful story of truth and reconciliation. This film weaves Royal Roads Military College\, a family of the Tsawout Nation\, and the Holten Canadian War Cemetery\, in the Netherlands. The film is a production of the War Heritage Research Initiative at Royal Roads University \, led by Professor Dr. Geoffrey Bird. This film project was guided by Indigenous Elders of several First Nations.

SUMMARY:Get Back Unplugged: The Beatles Reimagined
DESCRIPTION:Get Back Unplugged\, The Beatles Reimagined aims to revisit some of the best loved songs of late-period Beatles\, and to deliver them with the joy and spontaneity of friends singing around a kitchen table. \nBringing together six stellar singers and players who\, between them\, span the worlds of folk\, Celtic\, blues\, jazz\, and classical music\, this intimate and engaging performance does not try to imitate the Fab Four\, but rather seeks to present renditions that are authentic to the musicians’ own unique voices. A fiddle can give a dazzling guitar solo? An accordion can be a menacing bulldog? With renditions ranging from Nova Scotia folk music vibes to classic Tina Turner\, audiences marvel at this group’s incredible interpretations! \n‘Get Back Unplugged’ started as an idea of Vancouver-based folk-pop trio The Wahs\, after seeing the recent Peter Jackson-produced documentary about the famous Get Back recording sessions and the celebrated Beatles rooftop concert. \nFeaturing The Wahs: \nCameron Wilson\, Violin\, vocals \nAndrew Hillhouse\, Vocals\, guitar \nBrent Gubbels\, Bass \nand special guests: \nLJ Mounteney\, Vocals\, ukulele\, percussion \nAllan Dionne\, Accordion\, vocals \nDavid Gibbons\, Vocals\, guitar \nHosted by Beacon Ridge Productions. \nTickets are available through Beacon Ridge Productions.

SUMMARY:The Sutcliffes Dance Party
DESCRIPTION:A Beatles band with a slightly different take. The Sutcliffes focus is on the Beatles from Hamburg\, to the Cavern\, and the BBC studios- the songs they wrote\, the songs they covered and the songs they loved. They play early period songs\, with a nod to the more well-known tracks. They cover many of the Beatles seminal influences\, from early rock and roll classics like Chuck Berry’s Memphis\, to the slinky R&B of Anna and on to the country and rockabilly vein of I Got a Woman (their version of the Beatles doing Elvis’s cover of a Ray Charles song…). \nWhen the Sutcliffes were invited to play The Liverpool Beatles Festival they realized the dream of every kid who ever listened to the Beatles. The annual event sees tens of thousands of visitors make the pilgrimage to listen to some of the greatest performers from around the world. The Sutcliffes were the first artists from B.C. to ever be invited and were there with over 50 other acts from Europe\, Asia and North and South America. \nThe Sutcliffes are a band that is in high demand\, they have a huge following of devoted fans\, so be sure to get your tickets early to avoid disappointment. Their last dance sold out more than two weeks in advance! \nHosted by Beacon Ridge Productions. \nTickets are available through Beacon Ridge Productions.

SUMMARY:The Andrew Collins Trio
DESCRIPTION:Mando maestro Andrew Collins finds himself – through no actual fault of his own – at the epicentre of Canada’s acoustic/roots music scene. He didn’t invent it – but he’s certainly been a major contributor\, having co-founded seriously noteworthy Canadian bands like the Creaking Tree String Quartet\, the Foggy Hogtown Boys and\, more recently\, his namesake Trio. That’s not to mention the fact that this prolific\, robust performer – comfortable on mandolin\, fiddle\, guitar\, mandola and mandocello – composes\, produces\, arranges\, writes and teaches across multiple genres\, including an electrifying fusion of folk\, newgrass\, celtic\, and even a dash of chamber where warranted. \nAs Collins gathers up innumerable JUNO nominations (5) and Canadian Folk Music Awards (7) won by his various ensembles\, he’s zeroing in on the work he does with Trio-mates: fellow string guru Adam Shier\, whose versatility shines through on guitar and mandolin\, and in-the-pocket James McEleney holding it down on the bass\, mandocello and vocals. \nThe Trio just released their aptly titled album\, “The Rule of Three”\, drawing inspiration from the literary principle that a trio of elements is more impactful\, intricately weaving together visual and literary art’s “rule of thirds”. It’s an ingeniously intertwined homage to the trio’s unique and kinetic synergy. The album was recently nominated for 3 Canadian Folk Music Awards. \nHosted by Beacon Ridge Productions. \nTickets are available through Beacon Ridge Productions.

SUMMARY:Bird Walk with Friends of Uplands Park - September 2025
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of Uplands Park for their September 2025 Bird Walk!\n\nThis month’s Friends of Uplands Park bird walk with Geoffrey and David Newell is on Saturday\, September 27 with a 9:00 a.m. start in the main parking lot at Cattle Point. It’s peak fall migration these days as many species are passing through the region on their southbound routes. They will begin with a search for seabirds and shorebirds as well as ground-dwelling songbirds such as American Pipit\, Savannah Sparrow\, Horned Lark and Lapland Longspur at Cattle Point. The second portion of the event will take you through Uplands Park’s Garry Oak meadows and edge habitats where they will search for warblers\, flycatchers and sparrows among other migratory passerines. Finally\, they will stand in the meadow next to Dorset Rd and conduct a short hawk watch\, scanning the sky for kettles of Turkey Vultures and a variety of raptors. Friends of Uplands Park usually find 50+ species during this 2-3 hour long bird walk. All are welcome.

SUMMARY:Active Transportation Community Workshop
DESCRIPTION:These in-person workshops will provide opportunities to learn more about the District of Oak Bay’s Active Transportation Strategy (ATS) and share your input directly with staff and facilitators. Workshops are two and a half hours long\, open to up to 50 participants per session\, and registration is required. This workshop will take place in the Garry Oak Room at Monterey Recreation Centre.\nBackground\n\n\nIn May 2025\, Council directed staff to launch a broad community-wide engagement process to ensure the updated strategy reflects local needs and perspectives\, specifically related to the nine proposed cycling routes identified as key to building a cycling network. \nYour input helps shape Active Transportation in Oak Bay\n\n\nThis first phase of engagement (September\, 2025) focuses on gathering insights to inform an updated ATS as well as gathering high-level feedback to refine nine proposed cycling routes. \nThis input will inform both the updated ATS and the new Cycling Implementation Plan\, which will be presented to Council in 2026. \nHow do I register?\n\n\nVisit our Active Transportation Connect Oak Bay page\, where you can fill out a form telling us which workshop you would like to attend. Please note this is one of three workshops scheduled to ensure all community members have a chance to attend.
