SUMMARY:Ray Bonneville
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed raconteur and JUNO Award Winner Ray Bonneville strips his bluesy Americana to its essentials and steeps it in the humid grooves of the South\, creating a compelling poetry of hard living and deep feeling. His ninth release\, At King Electric\, delivers more than his trademark grit and groove. Rich guitar and harmonica lines resonate over spare but spunky rhythms\, while Bonneville’s deep\, evocative voice confesses life’s harsh realities. \nOften called a “song and groove man\,” Bonneville has lived the life of the itinerant artist. From his native Quebec\, he moved to Boston at age twelve\, where he learned English and picked up piano and guitar. Later\, he served in Vietnam and earned a pilot’s license in Colorado before living in Alaska\, Seattle\, and Paris. Six years in New Orleans infused his musical sensibilities with the region’s culture and rhythms. And then\, a close call while piloting a seaplane proved pivotal: \nAfter two decades working as a studio musician\, playing rowdy rooms with blues bands\, and living hard\, Bonneville’s lifetime of hard-won experience coalesced into an urge to write his own music. Whether performing solo or fronting a band\, playing electric or acoustic guitar\, Bonneville allows space between notes that adds potency to every chord\, lick\, and lyric. Often called a “song and groove man\,” he began writing his own music after two decades working as a studio musician\, playing rowdy rooms with blues bands\, and living hard. He’s since released nine albums\, won Canada’s Juno Award and other prestigious honors\, earned wide critical acclaim\, and garnered an enthusiastic following in the U.S.\, Canada\, and Europe. \nhttps://raybonneville.com/ \nTickets are also available at the Oak Bay Recreation Centre\, in person or by phone (250) 595-7946\, as well as through or Beacon Ridge Productions. \n

SUMMARY:Hildaland plus Q.Brooke Bachand & Charlie Gannon
DESCRIPTION:An exciting double bill of Folk & Celtic Roots music featuring 2X Irish Music Awards Winner Q. Brooke Bachand with guitar phenom Charlie Gannon\, plus the dynamic duo Hildaland\, from Orkney and the US! \nOrkney (Scotland) born fiddler Louise Bichan and Indiana (USA) mandolinist Ethan Setiawan present a collaboration and meeting of their musical worlds in Hildaland. A path steeped in the fiddle traditions of their respective sides of the Atlantic\, the journey taken wends through Scottish and American soil\, celebrating their foundations while intertwining with contemporary composition. Bichan’s fiddle is a melodic foil to Setiawan’s counterpoint and harmonic depth\, and the two weave in and out seamlessly. \nSetiawan has won such accolades as the 2014 National Mandolin Championship\, the 2017 RockyGrass Mandolin Championship and has shared the stage with the likes of Julian Lage\, Darrell Scott\, Bryan Sutton\, Mike Marshall\, Tony Trischka\, Darol Anger\, Casey Driessen\, the Steel Wheels\, Don Stiernberg\, Matt Flinner\, and Jacob Jolliff. \nBichan has won awards for her compositions and playing\, and has travelled far and wide to perform in various line ups since a young age. She has appeared at the likes of the BBC TV’s Hogmanay Live show\, Edinburgh Castle\, Reading Festival\, Cambridge Folk Festival\, Lorient Interceltique Festival\, Milwaukee Irish Festival and Sligo Live festival. In 2016 she released her first solo album\, Out of My Own Light\, to great acclaim. \nTwo time Irish Music Awards Winner Q Brooke Bachand is an established and recognized international touring artist well known for their duo work with younger brother Quinn. The siblings have garnered international acclaim and a mantle packing collection of awards and recognition\, performing at folk and Celtic festivals across Canada\, the US and Europe. \nNon-binary west-coast artist Q Brooke Bachand\, now known as ‘Q’ \, formerly Qristina Bachand is a consummate performer who is clearly at ease on stage. Known for their powerful fiddle\, captivating vocals and their contagious energy\, their love of Folk and Celtic music is always at the forefront as they bless audiences with energetic and spirited performances that showcase their fiddle & vocal talents as well as their love of story-sharing. \nQ is joined by local guitar phenom Charlie Gannon. Charlie is recognized as one of the best young guitarists in Victoria\, playing a wide range of styles from Celtic to Rock. His playing is highly technical yet sensitive\, with inventive harmonies and chord voicings he has learned from many years of playing jazz. He brings new life to the simplest of songs and performs even the most difficult with ease. \nhttps://www.sassafrashillproductions.com/hildaland \nhttps://qthey.ca \nhttps://charliegannon.com \nTickets are also available at the Oak Bay Recreation Centre\, in person or by phone (250) 595-7946\, as well as through or Beacon Ridge Productions.

SUMMARY:Steve Dawson with Fats Kaplin
DESCRIPTION:Juno Award-winning guitarist\, producer and songwriter Steve Dawson will be making a quick swing through the west coast of Canada in April 2025 and will have legendary sideman Fats Kaplin in tow from Nashville. Steve’s unique voice on slide and lap steel guitar is front and centre\, while the two musicians improvise and play off each other as they have done in their frequent work together. Steve’s original songs and fiery slide guitar playing are the focus\, along with the duo’s unique take on blues\, Hawaiian\, and ragtime music that both musicians love to play. While Steve is well-known to Canadian audiences in his frequent visits back to Canada\, Fats Kaplin is sure to be an exciting new find to many. Fats has spent a great deal of time on the road with artists like Jack White\, John Prine\, Mitski\, Beck\, Tom Russell\, The Dead Reckoners\, and Buddy Miller to name just a few. His facility on the fiddle\, mandolin\, banjo\, oud\, accordion\, and whatever he can lay his hands on makes him one of the most in-demand side-players in modern music. It’s rare for these 2 musicians to find a week where they are both available to tour together\, but find it they have\, and they look forward to sharing an exciting night of music with audiences in BC. \nOver the past two decades\, Steve Dawson has become such an indelible fixture on the Canadian musical landscape that it’s tempting to take him for granted. The music that flows out of him is so natural and authentic that it’s possible to forget all of the toil that went into producing it.  Behind the seemingly endless stream of award winning musical output (he has produced and/or played on more than 200 albums since the turn of the millennium\, 7 of which have won Juno Awards)\, is one of the hardest working musicians this country has ever produced. Whether he’s turning heads on the concert circuit with his incendiary playing\, or pulling the best possible performances out of the many artists that he works with in the studio\, Dawson is always striving to take things to the next level. \nA native of Vancouver\, Canada\, he currently resides in Nashville\, where he works as a solo artist\, sideman\, and record producer\, Steve has forged an impressive career full of highlights and awards\, including: \n\n7 Juno Awards as artist/producer\, 18 times nominated\n3 times named “Producer Of The Year” at Western Canadian Music Awards\n4 times named “Producer Of The Year” at Canadian Folk Music Awards\nRecipient of many other awards including Maple Blues Awards\, Grand Prix De Jazz De Montreal\, Blues Blast Awards\, and many Western Canadian Music Awards and Canadian Folk Awards as an artist and producer\n\nThe Upstairs Lounge is a licensed restaurant and bar\, doors open at 6 pm for dinner service.  Please note this is a LISTENING venue. \nTickets are also available at the Oak Bay Recreation Centre\, in person or by phone (250) 595-7946\, as well as through or Beacon Ridge Productions. \n  \nhttps://www.stevedawson.ca/

SUMMARY:A Century Celebration of the Victoria Cougars Hockey
DESCRIPTION:The Victoria Hockey Legacy Society is hosting “A Century Celebration” in honour of the Victoria Cougars’ historic Stanley Cup victory. This three-day event will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Cougars’ legendary championship win. \nIn partnership with the District of Oak Bay\, the majority of the festivities will be held at the Oak Bay Recreation Centre. \nAttention Oak Bay Recreation Centre Patrons: Please be aware that there will be no parking at Oak Bay Recreation Centre from March 28-31. \nEvent Information \n\nHistorical Information about the Victoria Cougars\nIn 1925\, the Western Canada Hockey League’s Victoria Cougars faced the National Hockey League’s Montreal Canadiens in a four-game series. \nVictoria won its first game at Patrick Arena\, which used to exist on the corner of Cadboro Bay Road and Epworth Street in Oak Bay. Montreal tied the series at Vancouver’s Denman Arena but the Cougars prevailed in games three and four at home in Oak Bay. \nA Historic Win\nThe BC Hall of Fame website notes that the 1924-25 Victoria Cougars were the second B.C. team to capture hockey’s most coveted championship chalice\, a decade after the Vancouver Millionaires won the first. The Cougars were also the last non-NHL team to win it. No other team from B.C. has won it since. \nTo get to the finals\, Victoria won its first-round series against Saskatoon\, and its second against Calgary. \nMembers of the Victoria Cougars 1925 team engraved on the iconic trophy include owner/coach Lester Patrick and players Jocko Anderson\, Frank Frederickson\, Frank Foyston\, Wally Elmer\, Harold Gizzy Hart\, Harry Meeking\, Jack Walker\, Clem Loughlin\, Gord Fraser\, Haldor Halderson and Harry Hap Holmes. \nThe Canadiens featured hockey legends such as Howie Morenz\, Georges Vezina and others. \nRead all about it\nAuthor Helen Edwards\, Presenting Sponsor of Century Celebration\, has written the quintessential history of hockey in Victoria – and it features the story of the Victoria Cougars and their Stanley Cup win. Learn more about it\, and where to get your copy\, here. \n \nThe Victoria Cougars’ Impact on Hockey \nThe legacy of the Victoria Cougars lives on in the game we love today! The Patrick brothers\, Victoria’s legendary hockey innovators\, introduced over 22 rules that still shape the NHL. Their game-changing contributions include: \n\nThe blue line & forward pass\nThe playoff system—now a global sports standard\nJersey numbers to help fans identify players\nAssists officially counted on goals\nGoalies allowed to fall to the ice to make saves\nThe penalty shot and new puck-kicking rules\n\nHockey wouldn’t be the same without their vision. \nImage: The Patrick Family – Ice Hockey Royalty – circa 1934 \n(Left to Right: Frank Patrick\, Lynn Patrick\, Joe Patrick and Lester Patrick) \n  \n \nExplore Victoria’s Rich Hockey Heritage! \nDid you know that in 1925\, the Victoria Cougars became the last non-NHL team to hoist the iconic championship trophy? They clinched victory against the Montreal Canadiens right here in Victoria\, with pivotal games played at the historic Patrick Arena in Oak Bay\, once located at Cadboro Bay Road and Epworth Street. \nThe 1924-1925 Victoria Cougars. Photo: BC Sports Hall of Fame \n  \n \nThe Detroit Falcons – A New Name and a Fresh Start \nAfter relocating to Detroit\, the Victoria Cougars were renamed the Detroit Falcons. Out of nearly 2\,000 suggestions\, “Falcons” emerged victorious\, beating out suggestions including Wolverines\, Dynamics and Ambassadors\, as well as Racketeers\, Hughes’ Hustlers\, Trojans\, Wanderers and Magnetos. \nA new city\, a new name\, and a fresh start for the team! \nThe Detroit Cougars\, who became the Falcons\, line up in Larry Aurie’s first NHL season\, 1927-28. Aurie\, Carson Cooper\, George Hay\, coach and manager Jack Adams\, Stan Brown\, Gord Fraser\,  Reg Noble\, Hap Holmes\, Percy Traub\, and Clem Loughlin.
