SUMMARY:Pop-up Outdoor Piano Concert: Jesse Thomas Brown
DESCRIPTION:Pop-Up Outdoor Piano Concert\n\nLocation: Willows Beach EsplanadeDate: Tuesday\, August 11Time: 12:30 p.m.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJesse Thomas Brown is a dedicated musical artist who has written more than 100 songs and performs between 350 and 400 shows each year. He has released four double-length albums of original material\, all with a theatrical scope reminiscent of Broadway greats such as Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. \nDrawing inspiration from storytelling songwriters like Bruce Springsteen and Harry Chapin\, Brown explores themes of isolation\, friendship\, injustice\, freedom\, survival\, corruption\, love\, fear\, and hope in his lyrics. While delving into the darker aspects of the human experience\, he balances his work with wry humour\, much like his musical heroes Leonard Cohen and Kris Kristofferson. At times\, his performances venture into pure farce and novelty\, reflecting an artist who prefers not to take himself too seriously. \nJesse Thomas Brown will perform at the Arts Alive Oak Bay Pop-Up Piano Concert\, Piano Océano\, on Tuesday\, August 11 at 12:30 p.m. at Willows Beach Esplanade. Visitors will also have the opportunity to meet featured artists Louise Huneck and Ana Strauss. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease bring your own lawn chair and umbrella. In the case of pouring rain\, the concert may be rescheduled.

SUMMARY:Tony McManus
DESCRIPTION:Join Beacon Ridge Productions for their next concert. \n\n\nhttps://www.tonymcmanus.com/ \n\n\nHailed as the best Celtic guitarist in the world\, Tony McManus was listed as one of the 50 transcendental guitarists by Guitar Player Magazine \n\n\n\n\nConjuring a unique but universal language from that most ubiquitous of instruments\, the acoustic guitar\, Tony McManus has both extended and transcended the parameters of contemporary Celtic music. Ranked by peers and predecessors alike alongside the guitar world’s all-time greats\, his fiendishly dexterous\, dazzlingly original playing draws on traditions from the entire Celtic diaspora – Scotland\, Ireland\, Brittany\, Galicia\, Asturias\, Cape Breton\, Quebec – along with still further-ranging flavours\, such as jazz and east European music. Long applauded for his uncanny ability to transpose the delicate\, complex ornamentation characteristic of traditional bagpipe or fiddle tunes – even the phrasing of a Gaelic song – onto his own six strings\, McManus is increasingly being acknowledged also as a pioneering figure in bridging the realms of Celtic music and other guitar genres. \nBorn in 1965 in Paisley\, near Glasgow\, his surname the legacy of an Irish grandfather\, McManus was introduced to traditional music via the family record collection. Having first tried his hand at the fiddle\, whistle and mandolin\, he took up the guitar aged ten\, although subsequent academic inclinations got him halfway through a PhD in maths before the music won out. After rapidly making his name as an unusually fluent and sensitive accompanist\, he took the solo plunge with a triumphant main-stage debut on the final night of Glasgow’s inaugural Celtic Connections festival in 1994\, supporting Capercaillie in front of a 2500-strong crowd. \nOver the years\, Tony has recorded a catalog of dazzling albums\, both solo and with friends\, delivering a breadth of artistry and performance which conjures up images and themes of the traditional music of the Celts along with more global influences from far and wide. \n\n\n\n\nTickets are available through Beacon Ridge Productions.

DESCRIPTION:Join Beacon Ridge Productions for their next concert. \n\n\nhttps://donrossandjulemalischke.com/ \nDon Ross and Julie Malía\, both well-established solo performers\, have decided to form a new musical partnership. While continuing to play solo internationally\, Don and Julie have been performing many of their shows as a double bill since the fall of 2023. In 2024\, they gave 45 concert performances in Germany\, the UK\, Canada and the USA. They have continued the habit in 2025\, having toured together on both sides of the Atlantic. \nDon released his latest solo album\, WATER\, in 2023. It is his 18th solo album\, and his 21st including collaborations. For this new recording\, Don decided to launch a Kickstarter fundraising campaign and do the release 100% independently. The album features collaborations with legendary guitarist/songwriter Bruce Cockburn\, fretless bass wizard Michael Manring\, Washington State-based guitarist/composer Sean Hall\, singer/guitarist Brooke Miller\, Prince Edward Island-based quintet The Atlantic String Machine\, and even one piece with the 70-piece City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. \nDon Ross was born and raised in Montreal and has lived in various parts of Canada over the course of his life. The son of a Mi’kmaw Indigenous mother and a Scottish immigrant father\, he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Music) degree from Toronto’s York University and started working full-time as a musician in 1988. That year he won the US National Fingerpick Guitar Championship for the first time. \nDuring the Covid-19 pandemic\, Don went back to university\, completing a Master of Arts degree in Orchestration through the University of Chichester (UK) and graduating in early 2021. He immediately started working extensively in the world of scoring orchestral and electronic music for video games\, films and television. \nIn addition to his solo performances and recordings\, Don also heads his quartet Don Ross Louder Than Usual\, which focuses on his more jazz-leaning repertoire. \nIn 2021\, Don won the prestigious Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in the Performing Arts\, administered by the Canada Council for the Arts. \nJulie Malía is a highly talented guitarist\, singer and songwriter who has made a name for herself in recent years with great compositions and impressive appearance festivals. Originally from Swabia in southern Germany\, she also works as a lecturer at the Carl Maria von Weber Music University in Dresden\, Germany. \nJulie is one of the most sought-after soloists on the European acoustic scene. There are few musicians who can boast such mastery of all these related but very different genres. \nJulie is known for her vibrant personality\, great sense of humor\, her wonderful voice and the virtuosity of her guitar playing. She has captivated audiences across Europe in her appearances at many of the most important festivals. \nJulie recently released her new CD\, Seagull \, featuring her original songs and her stunning guitar playing.
